After giving so many years of active service to the Benue State Government through the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), what we got on the long run was simply some dehumanising experiences. While our colleagues got Pensionable and Permanent appointments with the Benue State Civil Service, we were simply to continue as Contract Staff under harsh conditions. As if that was not enough, we never got salary for the job we offered till date.

As good citizens, after many appeal and letters to the Management of BIRS, the State Ministry of Finance, and the Executive Governor which never yielded any good response, we resorted to the Court of Law. At a time they realised they had no case, they opted for out-of-court settlement. Our Lawyer agreed, even though we felt shortchanged, we also agreed.

On APRIL 6, 2017 news hit the News and Social Media that our case has gotten the attention of the Benue State Government. On the stated report, the last paragraph said: “The State Executive Council also approved the payment of claims owed contract Staff of Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, between June 2014 and June 2016.” This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Lawrence Onoja Jnr after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by its Chairman, Governor Samuel #Ortom at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi. Salaries owed between 2014 and 2016 sure deserves immediate attention during this time when a “State of Emergency” had already been declared. One month after Approval, and over TWO Years of waiting, salaries are being paid and no one has spoken to us.

We therefore wish to request for immediate payment of all the claims that have already been approved by the State Exco. We have suffered a lot already, and there should be no further action to make worse our plights.

We worked tirelessly to improve the IGR and Tax administration of Benue State, and we deserve our wages. We hope that this matter is given urgent approval and the alerts come very soon, even this week.

All we ask, is that our Salaries and Benefits be paid in full to us.

I hope this gets to the Executive Governor.
