I read a report recently purportedly written as an aftermath of the meeting between The Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF)/CAN Representatives led by Dr Sam Itina with the Management of the National Education and Research Development Council (NERDC). The meeting was to address the issue of the reviewed CURRICULUM as it concern the subtle removal of CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS KNOWLEDGE.
At the meeting, the NERDC asserted that their documents goes through 3 levels of review before approval, and that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was duly invited and represented at all the 3 levels for the subject, Religion and National values.
This assertion which has not been denounced leaves one with so many questions and concerns. Again, it confirms my earlier submissions that we have become used to wailing after the deeds are done and sealed. Meanwhile, we don’t take too much care to nip things in the bud.
In the words of Rev. Fr. Gabriel Okonkwo C.S.Sp. “I seriously blame our Christian leaders who are lukewarm about defending what they profess. They eat chicken, drink tea and sleep in the comfort of their water beds. They will tell you church is not for politics while they go back to the church and play internal, dangerous worthless politics.” The Rev. Fr. further suggested that “Seasoned Christian Religious scholars should be charged with the responsibility of drawing up topics that will be contained there in”
That brings me to the issue at hand, the matter of the EDO STATE GRAZING BILL that is said to have passed second reading as at Tuesday, 20th June, 2017 by the Edo State House of Assembly. The public hearing has been fixed for this Thursday, 29th June, 2017 at the Anthony Enahoro Complex, Benin City.
This is a clarion call to all that are concerned about the incidences of the activities of the attack by “evil herdsmen”in Edo State, to come out and make their input before we are shortchanged by some ” powerful ” forces that have held out nation from being truly great and secure. I am aware that the invasion and forceful takeover of the premises of Ohovbe Primary School in Ikpoba Okha LGA is still fresh in our minds.
Just so we don’t become wailers after the deeds are done and the gavel is banged, it is instructive that we join to “speak truth to power” (if I may borrow words from Rev. Dr. Felix Omobude, National President of PFN).
It is imperative that we consciously begin to put our time where our mouth is. That we get involved in the real governance and engage our policies and politicians in the way and manner that casualties of this “democracy” can be barely minimal.
If you are around the University of Benin, Benin City, and you have the fear of God and the interest of Edo people in mind, then do well to join a session today.
Date: Today, Monday 26 June 2017
Venue: All Saints’ Chapel, UNIBEN
Please be punctual.
We can always get to where we all want to be if we all really commit to getting there. Thanks for your rapt attention.
